Every September 2nd, Old Forester honors founder George Garvin Brown’s birthday with a limited, one-time bottling. The 2015 edition is one of the most talked-about vintages in the series. It was the first Birthday Bourbon bottled at 100 proof, and it shows the bold side of a 12-year-old Kentucky bourbon.
The whole release came from a single day of distilling: June 13, 2003. Unusually, all of the barrels aged together in one spot in the warehouse, next to a window and a heating duct. That steady heat pushed the whiskey deep into the oak, giving it a rich, wood-forward character that sets it apart from other years.
Nose: Dry oak, pipe tobacco, roasted almonds, caramel, and vanilla, with gentle baking spice.
Palate: Warm mulled spice, cinnamon and clove, baked apple, and toasted nuts, balanced by honey and brown sugar.
Finish: Long, dry, and oaky, with a final note of pecan.
Only about 2,200 cases were made, and the 2015 is now one of the hardest Birthday Bourbon vintages to find. It’s a must for collectors building a vertical and a memorable pour for anyone who loves mature, oak-driven bourbon.
